From Bottega Veneta’s Andiamo to Miu Miu’s Wander, there’s a new breed of It-bag on the block. Increasingly, celebrities are also investing in more sustainable options, proving that your arm candy can come with strong eco-credentials, too.
A-list favourites include Gabriela Hearst’s Nina bag, which has been spotted on everyone from Angelina Jolie to Sarah Jessica Parker, as well as Stella McCartney’s Frayme bag, recently sported by Amal Clooney and Taylor Swift. Meanwhile, the Princess of Wales has long been a fan of British brand DeMellier, for those looking for a more affordable option.
Below, see the best eco-conscious bags to invest in now, according to the A-list.
DeMellier
British bag brand DeMellier has become a go-to for the Princess of Wales, who is often photographed with its Nano Montreal bag. All the label’s bags are crafted in Spain, made using LWG-certified leather.
Stella McCartney
A long-time animal rights campaigner, Stella McCartney is known for her vegan bags – with her Frayme design (as seen on Taylor Swift and Amal Clooney) among the most popular. With a limited run of the bags produced using plant-based leather alternatives Mylo and Mirum, the designer’s bags have a lower carbon footprint compared to those made from animal leather.
Chloé
The likes of Katie Holmes and Sienna Miller have long been fans of Chloé’s bags, including the Edith, Marcie and Penelope, while Gigi Hadid was recently spotted with an updated version of the latter design, featuring a top handle, while at the Andam Awards last week. All Chloé’s bags are made from Leather Working Group (LWG)-certified leather, which has to meet certain environmental and social standards.
Everlane
California-based brand Everlane is known for its consciously-made basics, so it’s no surprise that its tote bag has been carried by both Meghan Markle and Angelina Jolie. Its New Day Market Tote Bag is made using a bio-based leather alternative, while its Luxe Italian Leather Tote is made from leather that’s sourced from a LWG-certified tannery.
Gabriela Hearst
Gabriela Hearst’s Nina bag has quickly gained cult status, with the likes of Meghan Markle, Anne Hathaway and SJP all spotted with the design. In keeping with the designer’s eco-conscious practices, the bags are made in limited qualities – making them an even more worthwhile investment.
Toteme
Given that Scandi brand Toteme is known for its luxe capsule-wardrobe pieces, it’s no surprise that Katie Holmes has already been seen carrying its T-lock bag several times this summer. Available in black, brown and white, the bag is crafted in Italy using LWG-certified leather.
